Gaiters: when mud makes them worth it
Gaiters keep mud and seeds out of your boots. On a dry lane they are clutter. Here is when to bother with them.
A gaiter is a dull tube of fabric that seals the top of a boot. It has no glamour and almost no fans until the first path that tries to put the field inside your socks. Then it becomes the item people wish they had not left in the drawer. The trick is to know which days are those days, and to leave the gaiters at home for the rest.
What they actually stop
Short gaiters, the common walking sort, close the gap between trouser and boot. Mud, water from a shallow splash, grass seeds, heather litter and the small stones that work into an ankle all meet the fabric instead of your sock. They do not make a boot waterproof. They do not turn a ford into a pavement. They reduce the steady drip of wet and grit that makes a winter foot miserable by lunch.
Longer winter gaiters, the sort that cover more of the calf, belong to colder, wetter hills and to people who already walk in that season on purpose. For a lowland day, a short pair is the one to consider. Either way, they work best with a boot that has a proper rand and a tread, which is the boot in the fit and care guide.
The days they earn the faff
Wear them when the path is likely to be soft: after rain on clay, on a cattle-trodden field edge, on a winter green lane, on a moor where the trod is a black line through wet peat. Wear them if your socks are always soaked at the cuff even when the boot leather is coping. River meadows after rain and a hollow lane are the home ground of the gaiter.
They also earn their place in long grass and heather, where seeds and stems funnel straight into a boot. You will still get wet if you step in a pool. You will get less of the pool's contents as a souvenir.
The days they are clutter
On a dry chalk track, a hot coast path or a village-to-village lane, gaiters are a warm extra layer you must unhook at every stile. They slow you at kissing gates, they snag on brambles, and they persuade you that you are equipped for mud you then go looking for. Leave them in the bag, or at home, when the forecast and the season are kind.
Summer heat is the other reason. A gaiter over a thick sock on a sunny descent can overheat a shin and hide a hot spot. If blisters are your weak point, do not add a layer you will not check. Socks and hot spots still need a look at lunch.
Fit, hooks and the under-strap
A gaiter should close snugly at the top without cutting into your calf, and it should sit over the boot, not inside it where it will drag the sock down. The strap under the sole is the part people hate. It keeps the gaiter from riding up, and it wears through, and it collects mud. Check it before the day. A broken strap is a flap that fills with water.
Put them on at the car, not at the first bog, if you already know the bog is coming. Putting on a gaiter while standing in the problem is a comic sketch. Taking them off at a pub door, and carrying them in a bag so you are not the person who muds the floor, is the rest of the manners.
Care so they work next time
Rinse the mud before it sets. Dry them away from a scorching radiator if the label is cautious. A gaiter stored wet in a stuff sack becomes a smell you will refuse to put on, which means you will walk without it on the one day it mattered. Empty the grit from the zip. A zip that fails in January is the whole garment failing.
They are a seasonal tool, like gloves. You do not wear gloves in July to prove you own them. You do remember where they are in November.
Frequently asked questions
Do gaiters replace waterproof trousers?
No. Trousers shed rain from above. Gaiters defend the boot from below and from the side. On a wet day you may want both. On a muddy dry day the gaiters may be enough.
Can I wear them with walking shoes rather than boots?
Some low gaiters are made for shoes. Many boot gaiters will gape and rub on a low shoe. If the seal is fictional, the mud will find the fiction.
Are they worth it for children?
On a short, very muddy walk, yes, if the child will tolerate them. On a long hot day they are one more wrestle at every gate. Choose the battle you need.
