Field gates: leave them as you found them
A gate is doing a job for the field. Leave it as you found it, and shut it when the sign or the stock requires.
A gate is a tool that happens to be in your way. It keeps stock in, or out, or lets a farmer move a vehicle without rebuilding a wall. Your job as you pass is small and exact: leave it as you found it. That sentence is in the Countryside Code because the exceptions people invent are how animals end up in the lane.
Open or shut is not your preference
If a gate was shut, shut it behind you. If it was tied open, leave it tied open. A gate propped with a stone, or hooked to a post, is often open on purpose so that stock can reach water or a fresh strip of grass. Closing it to be tidy can separate animals from the water. Opening one that was latched, because the stile beside it looks harder, can empty a field into a crop or onto a road.
When a sign says shut the gate, shut it even if you found it ajar. Someone ahead of you may have been careless. You do not have to copy them. When you are genuinely unsure and there is no sign, shut it. The harm of an extra shut gate is usually smaller than the harm of stock wandering, though a clearly intentional tie-open should stay open.
How to work the latch
Lift, slide or unhook the fastening before you shove. A gate forced against its latch bends the post and teaches the next person that force is the method. Hold the gate while the party comes through, especially if it is sprung and keen to shut on someone's pack. Children and dogs go through under supervision, not as a dash while the gate is half open.
Stiles and kissing gates are the pedestrian route where they exist. Use them if the field gate is a heavy farm gate you do not need to open. Climbing the farm gate instead, because the stile is muddy, breaks hinges and drops you into the field the gate was managing.
Stock in the same field
Cattle, and particularly cows with calves, change the mood of a gateway. Give them space, keep the dog close, and do not push a group of animals through a gate you are also trying to use. If you are uneasy, go back and find another way rather than threading a nervous herd. Walking with a dog covers the wider manners. The gate is simply where those manners become urgent, because the gap is the escape route for everyone.
Horses in a field deserve the same calm. A waved pole or a flapping map at a gateway is a startle. Collapse the pole, speak quietly, and shut the gate before you admire them.
The gate that will not close
Sometimes a gate has dropped and will not latch. Try once, properly. If it still will not catch, do not wrench it. Note the location and report it when you are home, the way you would report a broken stile. Meanwhile, do not invent a new hole in the hedge so that your party can avoid the problem. A temporary nuisance is better than a new gap that stock will find tonight.
Tell the people behind you if a gate is awkward. A party that streams through and leaves the last person to wrestle it in the dark is a party that has forgotten the point.
Why this stays a walking skill
Shutting gates feels too obvious to practise, which is why it gets dropped when you are tired, wet and thinking about the pub. Make it the navigator's job to check the latch, the same way they check the turn. A route card can even say shut gates, as a prompt rather than an insult. The field does not know you are a careful person in ordinary life. It only knows what you did at this hinge of wood.
Leave the hinge working. The next animal, and the next walker, both need it.
Frequently asked questions
What if the group is long and the gate is heavy?
One person holds it, the others pass, the last person shuts it. Do not leave it open for the stragglers and hope. Stragglers can open a shut gate. Stock can use an open one.
A sign says open and another says shut. Which wins?
The sign on this gate, for this field, is the one to follow. If two signs contradict, shut it and mention the confusion when you report anything else that needs mending.
May I leave a gate open for a minute while I help someone?
Only if you are standing at it and can close it before an animal notices. A minute is a long time in a field with cattle near the lane.
